The road to becoming a poker pro is extremely winding

From application to stak-coaching

One of the most frequently asked questions we have to answer is about the process of the stak-coaching project, starting from when the application is submitted until the actual collaboration begins.
If you would also like to submit your application but don’t know what to expect, we spoke directly with our “head-coaches” for the Cash Game and MTT sections, Ciro Perna and Domenico Lando, respectively.
As you will see from their responses, there are many commonalities but also differences between the two course structures. Within the text you can get previews of the content, the coaches and the pathway you will follow when you apply for access.

Ciro Perna, cash game

At first, the candidate has to answer a few questions that give me an overview of who I am going to interview, such as “how many hands have you played? In how much time? Do you have a documented database? ” Based on the responses I already know more or less which teacher to give that profile to.
Then I and the teacher who seems most suitable do the interview with the candidate. Of course, it is not certain that that will be his ultimate coach. In the interview, we try to find out whether the person in front of us is willing to get involved, willing to commit. A key parameter, because you can learn theory from us, but determination is a trait you must have of your own.

Basically, however, we give everyone an opportunity, starting with form one. Then since the path is challenging, it will be up to the person to figure out if they can keep up with it. It happened very rarely that we did not accept someone within the school.
Then all the economic details are presented to the candidate to enable him to make his choice consciously, and if he accepts he is sent all the preliminary material, which addresses statistics, variance, and so on.

What are forms

The course is divided into three modules:
1) In the first we tackle all the pre-solver math.
2) In module 2 we go into game theory applied to poker in general
3) Contiguous to module 2, in the third we present the equilibrium search and calculation model

When the student reaches the end of module one, a thorough profile assessment is done and an attempt is made to see if he or she has all the necessary characteristics to continue. Up to the first module a student can withdraw at any time, from module two onward things get more serious, and at least three years must pass in order to leave.
The guys in module two I follow pretty much all of them, and there is a bond of trust and also friendship, to understand they are people I also go on vacation with. This trust is important, not least because there is unpublished material in modules 2 and 3 that cannot be found elsewhere, and in any case it would not be appreciable to find the theoretical material lying around either.
The basic coaches are quite interchangeable because we follow a curriculum anyway for convenience and to track his progress. Then the coaches are different people and have different strengths, maybe you start a path with one coach and then you get another one because he is more empathetic, or more mathematical. There is a tendency to look for the coach best suited to the candidate and to the point in the candidate’s career.
Most of the teachers play mid-stakes, 100-200, one in particular, however, is one of the strongest players I know as well as one of the strongest players around on .it, he plays NL1,000 and has been winning at least 100k a year for four years. The others who play mid also have the same ambitions and he is helping them.

Playing catch-up is the thing to do

Domenico Lando, MTT

After the application, the process begins with an interview where we contact him to ask for a description of his “poker career.” We inquire about various poker room nicknames, gaming aliases, previous coaching and/or staking.
Then we look at two or three hand histories including the various stages of an MTT so that we can assess his play in the different stages of a tournament, plus anything that can give us an indication of his level of play at the time of application.
This process is useful in identifying and assigning a coach, who by analyzing this data can indicate a plausible starting ABI for the candidate player.

Once inside

Once the ABI is established and an initial contact is made between coach and player, the stak-coaching agreement is discussed. This is formulated based on the information gathered during the application and tailored to the player.
We usually try to provide dynamic deals that allow the player to reach different profit percentages based on certain steps related to the player’s own application, propensity to study, actual profit generated, and other factors, and we seek a meeting point with the student to find the best deal for both of us.
In all of this, we are committed to providing the right bankroll and everything related to the educational aspect by making use of different coaches.
We currently count about 17-18 “coach groups.” I speak of groups because each coach may in turn have “sub-coaches” to make sure that the player is followed through.
